In response to Richard Brown of openSUSE, in https://www.reddit.com/r/openSUSE/comments/1ix1f4z/comment/mej6yhz/ (not totally related to the problems in the comment below):

Honestly, it becomes a disturbingly common thing to see how a person with a project flare and affiliation (you were the board member for 7 years according to your public profile and also are a distro architect at the moment) is flexing over a regular users opinion just because they can. Please, step back for a sec and imagine yourself as a regular openSUSE user not knowing anything about your job and problems.

Yes, SUSE team, and thus distributives, has a (strong) opinion on what is a good repo/kernel module/package/policy/etc and has a full right to do. As a software engineer that cares about quality and consequences myself, I'd be glad to support project's and your's stance on (not) adding a policy-less repo.

At the same time, users have their needs, which any particular project may or may not fulfill, completely or partially.

It was and still is the norm that a regular distro user would almost always include the Packman repo, because they need these few bits that are provided from there, to access these pesky media files.

I have been using openSUSE distros as about as long as you do (so about 20-ish years) and I have been seeing and doing this every (desktop) install. Because it's an eaiest way to get things done and proceed with what I'm doing with my computers besides installing the OS and adding repos.

I'd like not to do this zypper ar ... for Packman. I'd like to use ZFS on openSUSE (or on Linux in general) without pain. But I could not and, quite likely, never would be able to.

And this makes me quite sensitive to comments like yours from people like you (sorry to make it seem a personal quarrel, it's not) - strong and lacking any sign of understanding of your opponents, these mere users.

This comment https://fosstodon.org/@sysrich/111194234087319312 looks like a hipocrisy after all that.

Both are from the same person.

1. From thread on Raymond's Smart Questions discussion )

2. From thread on first day as programmer I assume )

It's really amusing when you have both pieces to read together. Not game-changing, but shows what "competent developer" could mean.

-And then there is Lauri Törni aka soldier of three armies.
First he served Finland and was awarded Mannerheim cross, when Finland had to sue for peace he was so strong anti communist that he joined Germans to continue the fight.
After war he migrated to US and after couple years enlisted to military and ended up in green berets.
He died in transporter helicopter accident during Vietnam war.

--Guy just loves a fight

---That and hated communists.

----Whatever gets you out of bed in the morning.

-----I'll settle for coffee mostly

--The song by Sabaton about him (Soldier of three armies) is rather good. Interestingly enough it's not even mentioned in his English wikipedia page, the Finnish one has it right there at the start though.

---Not sure if r/unexpectedsabaton or r/expectedsabaton

----I thought you were joking but they exist, both of them.
Over the years I've grown to expect all kinds of subs to exist but this time I was sure they weren't real when I saw your comment.

...when children learn two languages from birth each language proceeds on its own independent course, at a rate that reflects the quality of the children's exposure to each language

One well established fact about monolingual development is that the size of children's vocabularies and the grammatical complexity of their speech are strongly related. It turns out that this is true for each language in bilingual children. But vocabulary and grammar in one language are not related to vocabulary or grammar in the other language.

Turns out, the data were consistent only with the final possibility -- that the rate of vocabulary and grammar development are a function of something external to the child and that exerts separate influences on growth in English and Spanish;

...the key takeaway from our study is that it's not the quantity of what the children are hearing; it's the quality of their language exposure that matters. They need to experience a rich environment.

In young bilingual children 2 languages develop simultaneously but independently

I don't have to respond to people when they say stupid shit to me.

I can do anything I want, as long as I accept the consequences.

That everyone's too busy thinking about themselves to remember that one time I embarrassed myself by saying the wrong thing.

"I can say no to my parents".

I get to choose who's in my life and who isn't.

If new evidence presents itself, it's okay to change my beliefs about something.

That I am not, nor will I ever be conventionally beautiful.

The realization that my parents will always be disappointed in me, no matter what I do.

That life is unfair and its a good thing because it means you don't deserve all the bad things that happen to you.

I didn't mind not being alive before I was born, I probably won't mind being dead once I'm out of there.

My life improved drastically once I gave up all hope of a better past

You can't change something that has already happened, so stop worrying about it.

There is a work that states:

Specifically, relationship psychology. It's been demonstrated that there's a particular ratio of positive-to-negative interactions that predict the outcome of relationships: marriages with less than this ratio are far more likely to lead to a divorce. Specifically, 5 to 1.
For example, if there are less than five compliments you give your significant other for every one criticism, then they're more likely to believe that you criticize them more than compliment them. If you have less than 5 good days a week with your SO for every one bad day, then when you think back over your months or years together you're more likely to think that you have an equal amount of bad days than good, or evne more bad days than good.
The mind blowing part is really thinking about that ratio, and what it means about our memory and perspectives. Ideally we'd like to think that if we get complimented about as often as we're criticized, we'd remember a balanced mix of both. But the evidence supports the idea that we really take negative words or events to heart, and that it takes a highly disproportionate amount of positive praise or interactions to balance them out.
Something to keep in mind, when considering both how you feel, and how you treat others.

From AMA/Someone who quit their jobs in a blaze of glory, what's your story?:
The main "US" point - if you really pissed with boss's/company treatment, you can say "fuck this place, I'm out" and just walk away from there and never come back. Same is true for other side: you can be fired in minutes [in general].
Sure I know about it for a long time but still wonder about it. I was raised in completely different society with main thought in mind: "Stick with the job/manager/company you have". And I still trying to overwrite remnants of this to mindset of equal and fair treatment ("I. HAVE. A RIGHT. FOR ...").
And here lies some critical milestone to "positive mind" as it was called by gns_ua in one of our discussions about job stuff.

-What would "United Kingdom" be [in Hungarian]?

-Egyesült Királyság. But once I addressed a letter to my mates in Cardiff with "Egyesült Királyság" and I confused the lady at the post office a lot. It went something like this:
-What country is this letter going to?
    -It's Great Britain basically
    -You mean England?
-If you want to be specific it's Wales
-Sorry, Wales is not in the postal tarriff calculator

and the map also in Hungarian:

There is one slightly old guy from US, who is amused to live his late years as complete as he can and also to share his experience with all in the Internet.
This is his blog and his AMA on Reddit.
Some notable points:
1. was in Marine Corps during WWII
2. got 3 college degrees via national program Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 (G.I. Bill): BA - History, Latin and Athletics - to become a teacher and coach,
MA - Counseling Guidance - for school counseling,
PhD - Educational Administration - for various administration positions
3. "And I believe the social media as they/it are presently used are overrated and underrated. There is a time and place for everything, and I sometimes think they/it are like a new child's toy. Yet I think they hasonly begun to find their use as an instrument for furthering democracy and good government"
4. -What, in your opinion was the worst fashion trend?
-The zoot suit. We even had a great song about it in the 40's. But I also feel a BAD trend was the plainness of mens clothes most of my life...
5. -Thank you for your service ...
- ...Regarding "thanks for my service" I must add that my time in the service has been more than repaid to me by a caring, supported, NEEDED government that made it possible for me to use the GI Bill and a host of other benefits.

Today I had lunch with a friend who told me the story of a relative's court case. He was a lawyer for HP and was in court against another company who HP claimed had copied their design.
This lawyer had formally been an HP engineer and new all the ins and outs of these scanners, while in court he claimed that he could get their printer to play Ode to Joy. Both scanner were on display in the court room and he went up, pressed the right button combination and the HP scanner played Ode to Joy. He walked to the other side of the courtroom where the other scanner was and pressed the same button combination, the scanner played Ode to Joy and the owners were baffled; they had no idea their scanner could do that and promptly lost the court case. They put in these Easter Eggs for the purpose of preventing counterfeit devices from being sold by other companies.

Instruction from Easter Egg Archive

HP Scanjet Easter Egg - Ode to Joy
1. Turn off scanner
2. Set SCSI ID to 0 (using dial on back of scanner)
3. Hold down green button
4. Turn scanner on
5. Listen to the music
6. (you can let go of the green button)

-Say "fine" to the question how are you?
-This is somehow....very sad. People who are truly lonely or people who know that something's wrong with them will feel very different when saying fine. I say this because I'm at this state right now.
What I'm talking about isn't a simple "you say fine when you're stressed about your family situation" or something small like that. It's when you feel sympathy for your pathetic self as you say the word "fine" and you feel even more bad about yourself and you can't let that situation go easily even though it was one of the most simple conversation that lasted 2~3 seconds.
I always feel strange and weirdly depressed after I respond and say "Nothing", or "I'm good!" for a short moment.

The person who rang the bells in the middle of the night was 24-year-old Ivan Sydor, a graduate of the Orthodox Theology Academy. Sydor was sleeping in his room in the academy dormitory, right next to the cathedral, when his phone suddenly went crazy.

Callers found his number on the cathedral’s website and begged him to ring the bells. “They were crying and saying that EuroMaidan is going to be dispersed,” he recalls. “There were 70 calls during just one hour. People were calling from U.S., Poland, Italy.”

After requesting the blessing of the monastery’s prior Agapit, Sydor rushed to the bell tower. He has been ringing bells for three years, but this was obviously exceptional.

“The last time St. Michael’s sounded an alarm was in 1240, when Kyiv was under seizure from the Mongols. It was also a December, and the Mongols came to the Lyadski Gates, located in the place of modern Independence Square,” Sydor says.
