Today I had lunch with a friend who told me the story of a relative's court case. He was a lawyer for HP and was in court against another company who HP claimed had copied their design.
This lawyer had formally been an HP engineer and new all the ins and outs of these scanners, while in court he claimed that he could get their printer to play Ode to Joy. Both scanner were on display in the court room and he went up, pressed the right button combination and the HP scanner played Ode to Joy. He walked to the other side of the courtroom where the other scanner was and pressed the same button combination, the scanner played Ode to Joy and the owners were baffled; they had no idea their scanner could do that and promptly lost the court case. They put in these Easter Eggs for the purpose of preventing counterfeit devices from being sold by other companies.
